Last night our family celebrated my Mom and Dad's 50th Wedding Anniversary. It was held in the cultural hall of the chapel that we attended growing up. We needed a location large enough to hold 120 guests, and that was strictly family.
Five years ago we celebrated our parents 45th Wedding Anniversary because my father did not think that he would make it to the 50th due to his heart.
The event was catered by my Dad's favorite Mexican restaurant that he, his brothers and nephews frequent.
I loved the tribute given by Mom and Dad's family members as they stood and introduced their families to the rest of the party. This took some time because as I have mentioned before, we are one BIG family.
My father shared what he had learned through 50 years of marriage. He stressed that the most important work that we will ever do in life is within the walls of our own home and having spirituality in the home. To the young people he emphasized "Education, Education, Education" and honoring our parents.
My mother sat my father in a chair in front of her and recited a poem she had written for him entitled "It's Him." That was my favorite part of the evening.
The entertainment consisted of variety of talents performed by each grandchild, from the eldest all the way down to the youngest, which is Andrew my two year old. He sang with his cousins and the girls played piano. Kate played "I Am a Child of God" and Emily played "Ode to Joy" and "Jingle Bells." We also showed a DVD of Mom and Dad with the grandkids that I had been working on. The song "Everything" was a suggestion from my sister for the DVD and I have to admit, it turned out pretty cute.
The only act that was not by the grandchildren was "Sister Act 4." My sisters and I put on boas and sang "We are Family" with the whole family joining in. We even started a conga line.
It was a wonderful evening! One that I will never forget. Thank you Mom and Dad for the love and example that you continue to give to me and my family. I love you!
